It’s no secret that Wayne Dyer is one of my favorite
authors. I’ve quoted him several times in my book and I have pulled numerous passages
from his many books to read out loud during meditation time in my yoga classes.
It all started about
14 years ago when I read one of his earlier books, Real Magic – Creating Miracles in Everyday Life. I remember
precisely where I was when I first began developing a deep admiration for his messages. We were on vacation
at Disney World with my parents, and the kids were 7 and 5 years old. The bookmark
that remains in my old, heavily-highlighted copy of Real Magic, is the one that daughter Kenzie made for me while we
were on that trip. It is beautifully colored on Hampton Inn-branded notepad paper and says:
To Mommy, You are Special.
One of my many favorite passages in this book is about
how we “get to purpose” in our lives. Dyer provides a visualization for remembering the person you were ten years ago and how you became the person you are today.
I call this "connecting the dots" and often read
this visualization passage at my purpose board workshops to show how powerful a tool this can be – not only from the vantage point of looking back and seeing how you got to your
life today, but by using that knowledge to fast forward and create the life you want to live!
His visualization involves thinking back ten years
ago:
- What were you thinking about at that time in your life?
- How did you dress?
- What did you feel?
- With whom did you associate?
- Whom did you admire?
How much of what you experienced then, led you to who/where you
are today? Those little, seemingly unconnected, insignificant events viewed
from where you are sitting right now, somehow magically formed together to bring you to this very moment!
So, here’s the challenge: how do you envision your life ten
years into the future? What are those little events that are going to add up in
such a way where they bring you to the place you want to be in ten years? Check
out this simple worksheet that you can use to guide your thinking as you put
your own vision together and find ways to connect the dots to the next 10 years in your amazing
life!
